How Are IVF Embryos Transported Internationally?

    Published 15 November 2025 · ARKGlobal

how are IVF embryos transportedinternational embryo transportIVF shipping processcryo embryo courier

International IVF embryo transport is a highly specialised logistics process. Unlike standard medical courier services, moving frozen embryos across borders requires IATA-certified handling, cryogenic dry shippers, strict documentation, and uninterrupted cold chain monitoring.

Here is exactly how the process works — step by step.

Step 1: Documentation and Clinic Coordination

Before any shipment, both the sending and receiving fertility clinics must confirm readiness. Required documents typically include:

    • Written consent from the patient(s)
    • Clinic release letter confirming sample viability
    • Receiving clinic acceptance letter
    • Medical records and freezing protocol documentation
    • Import permit for the destination country (where required)

Step 2: Loading Into a Dry Shipper

Embryos are transferred from the clinic's storage tank into a cryogenic dry shipper — a vacuum-insulated vessel that uses liquid nitrogen vapour to maintain temperatures below -150°C. The loading is supervised by the clinic's embryologist, and the vessel is sealed and logged before the courier takes custody.

    Step 3: Hand-Carry Air Transport

A trained, IATA P650-certified courier hand-carries the dry shipper as cabin baggage on commercial flights. This avoids cargo hold temperature extremes and eliminates handoffs to unqualified handlers. Routes are planned to minimise layover time.

    Step 4: Real-Time Temperature Monitoring

Throughout the journey, a 5G-enabled data logger continuously records and transmits the internal temperature. Patients, sending clinics, and receiving clinics can monitor conditions in real time from anywhere in the world.

    Step 5: Customs and Delivery

At the destination, the courier clears customs with pre-arranged documentation and delivers the dry shipper directly to the receiving clinic's embryology team. A complete temperature log is provided as part of the handover.

Planning an international embryo transfer? ARKGlobal handles the entire process — from clinic coordination to door-to-door delivery with real-time monitoring.
