What Is IATA P650 Certification — and Why It Matters When Shipping Your Embryos

    Published 1 July 2025 · ARKGlobal

IATA P650 cryo shippingcertified embryo courierbiological specimen transport

When you hand your frozen embryos to a courier, you are trusting them with something that cannot be replaced. So how do you know whether a courier is actually qualified to handle biological specimens?

The answer starts with three letters: IATA.

    What Is IATA?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the global trade organisation for the airline industry. Among its many functions, IATA sets the safety standards for the transport of dangerous goods by air — including biological substances.

For biological specimens such as frozen embryos, sperm, eggs, and stem cells, the relevant standard is Packing Instruction P650 (commonly called IATA P650).

    What Does IATA P650 Require?

P650 governs how Category B biological substances — materials that are not expected to cause disease in healthy humans or animals — must be packaged and labelled when transported by air.

For cryogenic specimens specifically (those stored in liquid nitrogen), the requirements include:

    • Proper container: The specimen must be transported in a dry shipper — a vessel that uses liquid nitrogen vapour rather than liquid nitrogen itself, making it safe for air travel. Liquid nitrogen in liquid form is classified as a hazardous material and cannot be carried as cabin baggage.
    • Correct labelling: The outer packaging must be labelled with the biological substance category, shipper and recipient details, and emergency contact information.
    • Secondary containment: The inner vessel must be surrounded by absorbent material capable of absorbing the entire liquid content in the event of a leak.
    • Documentation: Proper airway bills and shipper declarations must accompany the shipment.

Couriers who work with cryogenic biological cargo must be trained and certified to these standards. An uncertified courier — no matter how professional they may seem in other respects — is not legally permitted to carry these materials on commercial airlines, and may not know how to handle an emergency if the dry shipper is flagged at security or held at customs.

Why This Matters for Your Embryos

Frozen embryos are sensitive to even minor temperature fluctuations. A quality dry shipper should maintain temperatures below -150°C for 5–7 days under normal conditions, but improper handling can reduce this window significantly.

    A certified IATA courier knows:

    • How to select the right flight routes to minimise layover time
    • Which airlines and airports have the correct handling protocols for biological cargo
    • How to respond if a flight is delayed or a connection is missed
    • What documentation is needed to pass customs without unnecessary delays at each country

Real-Time Monitoring: The Extra Layer of Assurance

IATA certification tells you the courier is trained to the correct standard. But for maximum confidence, look for a courier who also provides real-time temperature monitoring during transit.

At ARK Global Asia, our dry shippers are equipped with 5G-enabled data loggers that continuously record and transmit the internal temperature throughout the entire journey. Both you and your receiving clinic can see this data in real time — on your phone, from anywhere in the world.

Questions to Ask Your Courier Before Booking

Before you confirm a cryo courier, ask these questions:

    • Are you IATA P650 certified? Can you show your certificate?
    • Do you use dry shippers or liquid nitrogen vessels for air transport?
    • How do you monitor temperature during the journey?
    • Can I or my clinic track the shipment in real time?
    • What happens if there is a flight delay or cancellation?
    • Have you shipped to my destination country before? What are the import requirements?

ARK Global Asia is IATA-certified and provides real-time 5G temperature monitoring on every shipment. If you'd like to discuss a planned transfer, we're happy to answer all of the above questions and more.
